Great Bearded Dolphins.

In a strange – by definition, I suppose – case of synchronicity I’ve just discovered that Fungi/Fungie the bottle-nosed dolphin is so named because when he first turned up a local fisherman took an interest in him, for which early cetacean interest he was well and truly slagged in the free-ranging conversations in the hostelries of Dingle. The same fisherman was at the same time trying to grow a beard, and had been nicknamed ‘Fungus’ on that basis. The dolphin became ‘Fungus’ dolphin’ and thence Fungie.
