AN ILL WIND AND ALL THAT...

I'm sitting in West Cork - indoors, thankfully - looking over the top of a computer screen and out of the window at a cold, wet and windy landscape; and this is inland.

At one point i thought i might be on the water at this point. Glad not to be.

I have - by trawling the web and listening into the pre-web grapevine - found that there are two solo kayakers, at least, going for circumnavigations; both American and one already on the water (bon courage - the forecast is in your favour if you can hang on for another couple of days), with the other due to leave Dublin on the 7th. There is also an Irish trio already going around - if i heard the rumour aright. The more the merrier.

It' s both encouraging and intimidating to read how experienced these various kayakers are, and how well prepared. My approach is a little less confident; if everything works out well and the weather helps i'll probably journey a fair bit around the coast, or maybe even right around; if not i'll have a pleasant and long extended paddle without closing the circle. I'm very prepared for that if it's the way it goes; my safety net is having an open ended schedule and not feeling that i HAVE to get right around. I don't feel any need to push off into even marginal weather - my experience of weather and paddling being that it can get marginal enough and more when one's already out on the water, without going looking for the 'more' of weather. Not particularly Zen but merely pragmatic.
